Wheel Cleaners
Wheels are the dirtiest part of any car. If you are like most people, you probably spend less time cleaning your wheels than you do the rest of the vehicle. Some prefer to have a clean interior and shining body, and forget all about the wheels, which in effect takes a toll on the car.
Well, this is wrong, and it's high time we all realized that cleaning the wheels should be part of your car grooming duties. There are plenty of great wheel cleaners you can use to enhance the look and durability of the wheels.
Learning how to clean the wheel is the first step. Wheels are strong, and hence hard to clean. You cannot just get away with a simple splash of water on the wheels, but you need to go a step further.
Why Are Wheels So Dirty?
With time, grime and dirt accumulate and impact the ability of the wheels to function properly, which accelerates their rate of deterioration. Additionally, each time you put on the brakes, the hot brake dust produced sticks to the wheel’s surface.
Dirty wheels will also affect your car’s appearance. When they spin, all the grime and dirt will be sprayed on the body of the car, which will destroy the polishing you did. More importantly, when the brake dust is ignored, it will solidify and cause permanent damage to the wheels.
How to Clean the Wheels?
Cleaning neglected wheels will require the use of professional wheel cleaners.
Did you know that wheels can be polished too? You will need to use a wheel polish for that, and will absolutely love the results!
Step One: Fill two buckets with water. One for the body, and the other one for the wheels.
You shouldn't use the same bucket for both body and wheels as they will transfer dirt from one to the other.
Step Two: Hose the wheels, one rim at a time. Be sure to use a powerful hose with a strong steam. After hosing the rims, use a cloth to remove all the grime, dirt and brake durst from each of the rims.
Step Three: Applying the cleaner. Spray one wheel at a time, with a professional wheel cleaner in order to protect the wheel’s finish. Use a water based non-abrasive, and non-acidic wheel cleaner.
This process helps in loosening up the grime and also lubricates the wheels. It is important to do this so you do not scratch the alloy rims. If possible, you should avoid using anything that’s acid-based as these carry the risk of causing damage to the wheels, especially if they are clear-coated.
Step Four: Cleaning the wheels. Use a soft-bristled brush. This is the best option. The regular sponge you use for the body of the car is not up to the challenge of scraping off all the dirt and grime accumulated on the wheels.
Using a hard-bristled brush on the other hand risks scratching your rims. Also, you should use some elbow grease and be careful not to scratch the finishing. Use a long brush that reaches into the crevices of the wheels and cleans around the nuts and inside the holes.
Step Five: Rinse the wheels well, with clean water, and ensure to include the spokes, lug nuts and wheel wells as well.
Step Six: Drying the wheels. For this, use a microfiber towel, or a car dryer to ensure the wheels are totally and completely dry. The BLO Car dryer is actually the best option as it provides a contact less drying process that’s safe and totally reliable.
Step Seven: Detailing the wheels: When corrosion, grime and brake dust remain on the wheels, they can cause serious damage to your vehicle. In order to protect the wheels you should use some detailing clay that keeps the dirt from the wheels.
