How to Wash a Ceramic Coated Car
Posted by JEFF MCEACHRAN
Use a pH-Neutral Shampoo — Every Time
Harsh detergents strip the hydrophobic layer from your coating over time. It's a slow process, but it adds up. A pH-neutral shampoo designed for coated cars preserves that layer and lets the water beading do its job every wash.
GYEON Q²M Bathe is formulated specifically for ceramic-coated cars. It lubricates the wash mitt and leaves no residue. For additional protection during the wash, Q²M Bathe+ is an SiO₂-infused shampoo that cleans while boosting gloss and water repellency.
Pre-Wash Before You Touch the Paint
If there's any surface debris — road grime, dust, pollen — a pre-wash loosens it before you run a mitt over the panel. Skipping this step grinds contamination across the paint.
GYEON Q²M Foam works as both a pre-wash and a dedicated snow foam. Apply it with a foam cannon or sprayer, let it dwell for two to three minutes, then rinse before your contact wash.

Two Buckets. Always.
One bucket with shampoo. One bucket with clean water for rinsing the mitt. This is the single most effective way to prevent swirl marks — and swirl marks on a ceramic-coated car are your fault, not the coating's.
Use a good-quality microfiber wash mitt and rinse it after every panel. The investment in proper washing technique is what keeps the paint looking flawless under the coating for years.
Dry Properly
Water spots are the enemy of ceramic coatings — especially in areas with hard water. Don't let the car air dry. Use a dedicated drying towel like GYEON Silk Dryer or a leaf blower to get water out of panel gaps before you wipe.
The hydrophobic effect from the coating will sheet most water off during rinsing, but you still need to finish the job. Wipe in straight lines, not circles.
Apply WetCoat Every Two to Three Washes
GYEON Q²M WetCoat is a spray-applied SiO₂ booster. Apply it to wet panels after your rinse, before you dry. It refreshes the hydrophobic layer on the coating and extends its life significantly.
This is the single highest-return maintenance step for a ceramic-coated car. One bottle lasts dozens of washes. The water behavior after application tells you immediately whether the coating is performing at full strength.

What to Skip
A few things people commonly reach for that will hurt a ceramic coating:
• All-in-one wax or polish products — they typically contain mild abrasives that will dull the coating surface over time.
• High-pH degreasers on panels — fine for wheels and tires, not for coated paintwork.
• Automatic car washes — the brushes create micro-scratches, and the detergents are too aggressive. If it's touchless, the chemistry is usually still wrong.
Between washes, GYEON Q²M Ceramic Detailer is the right option for spot cleaning and dust removal. For a coating that needs a light refresh without a full wash, Q²M Cure Redefined is a spray booster that adds SiO₂ and restores gloss.
The Short Version
• Pre-wash with foam every time
• pH-neutral shampoo, two-bucket method, microfiber mitt
• Apply WetCoat after every two or three washes
• Dry thoroughly — no air drying
• Skip wax, polish, and automatic washes
A ceramic coating is a long-term investment. The maintenance that protects it is simple. Wash it right, and it will outperform everything else on the market.
